For the 2008 series we presented poets Guadalupe M. Méndez, Julietta Parra Ducote and an encore of Randy Cordero for our event held at the Brazilian Arts Foundation and supported by the Poets & Writers, Inc. Our summer event “Lorca: Poetry and Dance” was sponsored by the Freed-Montrose Public Library as part of the library’s summer adult reading program, and featured guest artist, flamenco dancer Ana de la Peza. Recently The Flamenco Poets Society presented "Fiesta Flamenca" sponsored by the Artery in collaboration with guitarists, Randy Cordero and Jeremy Garcia - Soniquete Flamenco Dance Co., under the direction of Ana de la Peza and Alexandra Simmons with dancers, Sandra Muñoz and Sianey Montes de Oca, and cantaora, Irma “La Paloma”. A portion of their performance can be seen by visiting our link at: “Fiesta Flamenca”.
These journeys are a common thread in the human experience that we can identify with.
Randy is originally from Corpus Christi and studied with such prestigious guitarists as Rene Heredia, Paco Garrigues "El Chatarrero", Chuscales, José Luis Rodriguez, Pedro Cuadra and Domingo Rubichi. Mr. Cordero performs throughout Texas, Colorado and Mexico, and has collaborated with artists such as classical guitarist, Maria Cortes, flamenco guitarist, José Perello and flamenco dancers, Sylviana Keptra, Olaya Solis and Paco & Laura Garrigues. Randy recently moved to San Antonio, Texas to continue his studies at the university. He is presently a freelance flamenco guitarist and regularly performs at several venues in San Antonio and Houston. He also teaches flamenco guitar classes. He is currently working on a CD recording of his music.
Ana de la Peza is Artistic Director of “Soniquete” Flamenco Dance Company. She began dancing flamenco in Mexico City and has taught extensively at universities and private studios. In 2004 she moved to Albuquerque, NM to begin flamenco instruction under the Encinias family. She was part of their Alma Flamenca troupe for two years and had the opportunity to study with some of the most renowned flamenco artists in the world. Together with Alexandra Simmons, she strives to bring creative & innovative flamenco to Houston. |
