Storytellers
Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery and The Flamenco Poets Society proudly sponsors and afternoon of talented, local storytellers once a year.
Dennis Ducote
Was born in New Orleans, & comes from a long line of French descendants who lived in the River Parishes of Louisiana. After completing his education in Engineering, he migrated to the Lone Star of Texas to work for an engineering company. Dennis has now lived in Houston for 33 years, so this definitely qualifies him to be an adopted Texan. He has been around the world several times. He doesn't like crayfish, boudin or Dixie beer, but he does enjoy Lone Star beer & barbecued tofu. During his high school days Dennis became interested in poetry after reading Carl Sanburg's “Four Preludes on Playthings of the Wind.”
Guadalupe M. Méndez
Is a Houston writer and poet. Originally from Galveston, Texas, he has lived in Houston for the past decade and graduated from the University of St. Thomas were he received his BA in Bilingual Education. He teaches 5th grade science at Cunningham Elementary. During this time he joined Nuestra Palabra: Latinos Writers Having Their Say. He is a published poet and his name is included in the Houston International Poetry Anthology. Guadalupe is a performing poet and hopes to publish in Mexico. He got into writing as all men do - for a girl during his junior year. He wrote her a poem and she dumped him a week later. He never stopped writing. He likes to use his hands a lot when he is reading and is terrible afraid of Texas roaches, especially the ones that fly.
Macario M. Ramirez
Was born in San Antonio to parents of Mexican descent. Macario Ramirez is the proprietor of Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery, a retail establishment which celebrates and promotes Latino culture and special events. His interest in storytelling or cuentos reflect his interest in preserving the traditions of oral history and folklore.
Larry Russell
Is a native Texan, having grown up in Corpus Christi and the accent is authentic. He has worked as a self-employed consultant engineer for 30 years, specializing in the design of gadgets (some little, some huge) for the oilfield and offshore industries. He was guilty of telling stories even before his 3rd year stint as a weatherman and has only gotten worse about it over the years.
Richard E. Reyes
Is the director of Pancho Claus Art and Education Projects, he is a youth mentor and drama teacher. He is interested in educating youth at risk throughout the Houston area, and our city is very fortunate to have someone like Richard.
